Prevention of Dental Problems
Preventive dentistry is the modern way of helping you keep a healthy mouth. At Molloy Dental we believe strongly in taking a preventative approach to dental care. The two main causes of tooth loss are decay and gum disease. The better you prevent or deal with these two problems, the more chance you will have of keeping your teeth for life.
Promoting health through preventative and routine hygiene care is the heart of our practice here at Molloy Dental. Regular monitoring of the mouth can detect early signs of oral cancer and recent research has shown healthy gum condition can lead to a healthier heart and cardiovascular system.
More than just “cleaning”, these visits allow us to monitor your health and catch potential problems early. Prevention is not only easier than cure it is also cheaper than cure, the easiest dentistry is the dentistry that you don’t need. The team here at Molloy Dental may recommend a course of treatment to get your mouth into good condition, and then work out a ‘maintenance plan’ to help you keep it that way. At Molloy Dental we want to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime.
The hygienists role is complimentary to that of a dentist, their primary focus within our practice is keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy. At Molloy Dental on examination, our dentists will be looking at the health of your teeth and gums, our hygienist works under a treatment plan from the dentist to maintain or improve the health of your gums which is central to maintaining teeth in the longer term.
What Can They Do For Me?
A common misconception is that a hygienist is just there to clean teeth, in fact it is a bit more complex than that. At Molloy Dental our hygienists are able to provide professional treatments that will clean much more and deeper than you are able to achieve with your toothbrush at home.
- Stains
Tea, coffee, red wine etc. stain your teeth over time, our hygienist helps eliminate these stains. A number of methods are employed including the KAVO Airflow system which uses air, water and sodium bicarbonate. - Dietary Advice
All foods we consume will affect our teeth in different ways, this could be simple staining or as severe as acid wearing your teeth away. When your diet has a damaging effect on your teeth, your hygienist will advise on substitution or supplementation of your diet. - Fresh Breath
a mouth without Tartar or plaque means fresher breath as there is less bacteria to cause the odour! - Prevention of Gum Disease
All gum disease will start with bleeding, especially when brushing your teeth or flossing. Our hygienist is always on the lookout for this and if they spot symptoms they will arrange regular appointments, and by doing this they will be able to help prevent progression before the disease has the chance to take hold. This is a really important factor as failing to pay attention to bleeding and leaving it untreated, can lead to the movement or even the loss of teeth. You would not ignore your hands if there was blood every time you washed them so don’t ignore your gums. - Oral Hygiene Planning
our Hygienists will work with you to create a specific plan for the optimum maintenance of your oral hygiene. This will involve recommending the correct products for your needs such as different types of brushes and interdental brushes and showing you the most effective ways to use them.
We all know that sometimes life gets in the way of the perfect brushing routine. A thorough clean with the hygienist makes it easier for maintenance of a healthy mouth in between visits. Improved oral hygiene should mean even less visits to the dentist in the long run!
